North Carolina Teachers Struggle To Survive under Historic Low PayBy Veronika Bowermaster, Kristen Hurtado, McKenna Jones & Jackson Woodward Though regarded by America’s founders and many philosophers as the foundation of civil society and the component most essential to the preservation of democratic forms of government, education is often ranked among the lowest-paid professions in the United States. According to EducationNC, 52 percent of teachers in this State work a second job to make ends meet. In the fall of 2023, NC House Bill 259 (also called the 2023 NC Appropriations Act) raised starting teacher salaries to $39,000, up from the previous year’s $38,099. As a result, new teachers look to make 12.8 percent less than their counterparts in 2015, despite the rising cost of living. This adjusted-for-the-cost-of-living decrease in teacher pay, concealed as it is within a bill that ostensibly raises teacher pay, suggests that starting teachers will actually earn less (not more) than before, further diminishing the appeal of the teaching profession during a period of teacher shortages.
"Jail-a-thon" Fundraiser Makes HistoryBy Jackson Woodward Beginning on November 3 and ending November 20, 2023, Cumberland Polytechnic High School found itself embroiled in a veritable war. The school was torn apart—split in two over the SGA’s “Jail-a-thon” Fundraiser for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina. The Jail-a-thon campaign raised more than $1,000, collected hundreds of pounds of canned foods, and publicly arrested CPHS English III Teacher and Yearbook Adviser Mrs. Andrea Phillips.
